Eight people, one destination and three ways to get there. The choice of maxi taxi vs Uber XL vs minibus hire comes down to capacity, how each service charges, and how much luggage you carry. This guide compares the three for a group of eight in Melbourne, so you can pick the option that fits your trip and your budget.
Maxi Taxi vs Uber XL: The Capacity Problem
Start with the seats. An Uber XL usually carries up to six passengers. A group of eight therefore needs two cars, two drivers and two fares. A maxi taxi, on the other hand, seats up to 11 in a single vehicle, so all eight travel together with room to spare.
Side-by-Side Comparison for 8 People
| Factor | Maxi taxi | Uber XL | Minibus hire |
|---|---|---|---|
| Vehicles needed for 8 | One | Two | One |
| Typical seats | 7 to 11 | Usually up to 6 | Often 12 or more |
| How you pay | One quote per trip | Two app fares, which can surge | Often hourly with a minimum hire |
| Luggage space | Large boot and cabin | Limited, split across two cars | Generous |
| Best for | Airport runs, weddings, nights out | Small groups and short trips | Long events and big parties |
How the Costs Really Compare
No fair comparison can quote one price, because every trip differs. Instead, compare how each option builds the bill.
- Maxi taxi: you receive one quote for the whole trip. Divide it by eight to see your cost per person.
- Uber XL: you pay two fares, and each can rise with demand. Airport pick-ups may add a rideshare charge; Melbourne Airport lists its current charge on the airport transport page.
- Minibus hire: operators often charge by the hour with a minimum booking. That suits an all-day event, but it can cost more for a simple 40-minute transfer.
For a one-way airport run or a night out, a maxi taxi usually has the simplest and most predictable bill. Compare it yourself by requesting a quote from us and checking the app price at the same time.
Luggage, Comfort and Convenience
Luggage decides many group trips. Eight people with suitcases will not fit into two rideshare boots. A maxi taxi like the Toyota Hiace has generous boot space, and our fleet lets you choose between 7 and 11 seats. Minibuses also have space, but they can be oversized for a small group.
When Each Option Wins
- Choose a maxi taxi for airport transfers, weddings, Christmas outings and nights when everyone should arrive together.
- Choose Uber XL for groups of six or fewer, or when you need a ride immediately without booking.
- Choose minibus hire for full-day events, large parties or when you need more than 11 seats.
The Booking Experience
A pre-booked maxi taxi gives you a confirmed vehicle and a professional driver, rather than hoping a nearby car accepts your request. You can book online or call 0420 614 195. It often is. Eight people usually need two Uber XL cars, while one maxi taxi carries everyone on a single quote. Compare an app price with our quote for your exact trip.
How many people fit in an Uber XL?
An Uber XL usually carries up to six passengers, so a group of seven or eight needs a second car.
What is the difference between a maxi taxi and a minibus?
A maxi taxi seats about 7 to 11 and is booked per trip. Minibuses often seat 12 or more and are commonly hired by the hour.
Can eight people with luggage fit in a maxi taxi?
